Sing on stage with the “Prince of Kosher Gospel”
Joshua Nelson Kosher Gospel Workshop

On Saturday, August 2nd, world-renowned and Grammy-nominated “Kosher Gospel” singer Joshua Nelson will teach a workshop at Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro.

Participants find out what Kosher Gospel is, will learn how to sing Kosher Gospel music, and will learn 4-5 songs. In addition, participants will perform with Mr. Nelson during his August 4th evening concert at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center.

Joshua Nelson is a lifelong observant Jew, who takes his African-American Jewish background, mixes it with his love for traditional Gospel music, and arranges Jewish liturgical songs as “Kosher Gospel.” Add his amazing tenor voice (reminiscent of the style of Mahalia Jackson), and you have a spiritual, musical experience like no other.

Joshua Nelson was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and has been seen locally at the Agency for Jewish Educations’ 2006 Limmud and the 2007 Union of Reform Judaism Biennial. He has performed alongside such notable artists as Wynton Marsalis, Billy Preston, Aretha Franklin, and Stephanie Mills; the great Klezmer band The Klezmatics; Gospel greats Albertina Walker, the Barret Sisters, Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin, Dottie Peoples, Dorothy Norwood, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Reverend Timothy Wright, and Bobby Jones & New Life, and late jazz greats Cab Calloway and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. He performed extensively throughout Europe and Israel, as well as for the Prime Ministers of both Sweden and Israel.

The Kosher Gospel Workshop, which is open to all ages, will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 2nd at Temple Emanu-El, located at 6299 Capri Drive in San Diego, in Del Cerro near San Diego State University. The registration fee is $36.00, which includes all materials.
